Plot colonel’s release disappointing

The release of Col. Dursun Çiçek on Friday, 44 hours after being arrested on charges of membership in Ergenekon -- a clandestine gang charged with plotting to overthrow the government -- created great disappointment among many in Turkey who want Turkey’s democracy be free of military influence.

Çiçek is the figure who signed a controversial army plot titled the Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism, which details a plan to undermine the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Forensic reports and the discovery of the original of the document have shown that Çiçek was a party to the plot, which included shadowy plans; however, his release from prison despite strong evidence against him has shown justice does not function in the same way for all in this country.

Star’s Mehmet Altan, who is very critical of Çiçek’s release, gives tips to terror suspects about how they can be released from jail just like Çiçek. “Let’s say you’re a suspect in committing crimes of terror but your residence address is known by everyone and you are not likely to flee. Then, theoretically speaking, you can be released from jail within 43 hours of being imprisoned. Let alone being released, you can be completely freed of charges against you due to a lack of evidence despite a forensic medical report and an original document [proving your membership in a terrorist organization],” says an ironic Altan. Continuing his advice, Altan says: “Try to be a colonel if you are not a colonel. If you are not an officer, try to be an officer. If you have not prepared an action plan to fight reactionaryism, prepare one. If you have not made plans to detonate bombs in the midst of innocent people, do so. If you fall short of the charges directed at a terrorist organization suspect and don’t have Col. Çiçek’s features, then there is nothing I can do for you. If you insist on being released, try to resemble Çiçek. If you are not a terror suspect who does not resemble Col. Çiçek, then it is very difficult for you to be released,” Altan quips.

Another Star columnist Ahmet Kekeç says he is not very eager to see people in jail but he wonders how Çiçek can be released despite the existence of concrete evidence that he signed the controversial document. “I want to know what this release means. Who is intimidating who? I want to know. I want to know. Is making coup plans a simple offense?” Kekeç says.

Sabah’s Nazlı Ilıcak is also very disappointed about Çiçek’s release and says she is very surprised how he can be released from prison although there is material evidence suggesting his involvement in coup plans.
