The ‘shoe-headscarf’ equation
Here is how the Republican People’s Party (CHP) mayor of Antalya, Professor Mustafa Akaydın, voiced his opinion on the “headscarf” shame that occurred at the Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA) in Ankara: “Well, you can’t enter a mosque in shoes, so how could someone really expect to enter GATA wearing a headscarf?”

We now find ourselves at a point where even those who boast the title of “professor” are in danger of blurring the thin line that lies between opposing something and having consideration for the feelings of others. Mosques are places of prayer. And prayer is a part of belief. People of faith take off their shoes in the name of cleanliness when they come to their places of prayer. The main reason for taking off your shoes when you arrive at a mosque is to protect the mosque from dirt and filth. This is a simple bit of knowledge that even a primary school student knows. And it is unthinkable that a professor might not know this.
