Bugün: “We knew about the juntas,” the daily said in the headline of its main story yesterday, quoting remarks from Ömer Dinçer, who served for four years as a Prime Ministry undersecretary. Dinçer said the government knew about all the coup plans that are being uncovered today one by one. “We knew about all the coup plans including the Sledgehammer coup plot, which was exposed last month. We were making an evaluation of these plans,” he said. When asked how the realization of such military plans was averted, he said, “Time and the judicial process will show all the facts to the public.”

Taraf: “AK Party opposition is not leftism,” the daily said in the headline of its lead story yesterday, quoting remarks from political scientist Fuat Keyman. “The secular middle-class is searching for any kind of alliance against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) just for the sake of opposing them. This causes the leftist ideology and being a democrat to lose their meaning,” Keyman said. He said there was grassroots support for a leftist party in every Anatolian province. The AK Party became the most popular party in Anatolia because it has understood this reality, but the left can’t grasp this. “What those defending leftism and social democracy should do is to not depend on the state and old discourse, but to rely on Anatolia and embrace it.”

Sabah: “Obama is doing the right thing,” said the headline of a front-page article yesterday, quoting remarks from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan referring to efforts at healthcare reform exerted by the Obama administration in the US. “Once an American tourist asked me how we had achieved healthcare reform in Turkey. When I explained this to him, he asked me to tell Obama about it. Obama did the right thing with the healthcare reform. But the winds of capitalism there still block the protection of the poor,” Erdoğan said.
