If an educated woman with a headscarf who even served as a deputy for some time makes a public appearance on a TV program and says, by wearing her headscarf the way certain groups demand, “I have been working while wearing my headscarf for some 15 years, and no public institution has raised difficulties to my entry [to public institutions].

The problem is about abusing the headscarf for political purposes,” what would your reaction be? Years ago, a professor of theology had claimed during an academic conference that “there is no obstacle or hardship in this country for a Muslim who wants to observe religious duties.” And, I retorted, “You either have never tried to observe your religious duties or are just being political.” The solution that will be satisfactory for Muslims who wear headscarves for religious reasons is one that would allow anyone to wear a headscarf wherever one is. Lifting the headscarf ban only on university campuses -- which some politicians boast about having tried to achieve -- will not satisfy secularists or Muslims. As long as freedom of religion is blocked – to whatever extent -- Muslims will be victimized, and those who block it will be tyrants.
