Selahattin Ortaboy, director general of Batman culture and tourism bureau, told the Anatolia news agency that there has been a remarkable rise in interest in Hasankeyf in the recent period and they aimed to increase the number of tourists visiting this ancient city to 1.5 million in 2010.

Hasankeyf was in danger of being inundated by Ilisu Dam which was expected to be completed in 2013, he said.

Hasankeyf, located on the River Dicle (Tigris) in the southeastern city of Batman, is an ancient city dating back 10,000 years that was declared a natural conservation area in 1981. However, the district as well as its historical and cultural wealth are in danger of being inundated by Ilısu Dam. About 90 percent of the area will be submerged when the dam is built.
