This feast commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God. The Eid al-Adha celebration commences with a congregational prayer and sermon, or khutba, at the mosque. This is followed by the sacrifice of an animal in remembrance of the angel Gabriel’s substitution of a lamb as Abraham’s offering. One-third of the meat is given to the poor, and the rest is shared with friends and family. Celebrated with gifts and merrymaking, the festival lasts three days. It is celebrated as Tabaski in Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger and Senegal and as Hari Raya Hajj in Southeast Asia.
