I am not a neo-Ottoman, Davutoğlu says

Reacting to several media outlets, the Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said he has never said he is a neo-Ottoman in any way during his trip to Libya signaling misleading quotes of him saying that Davutoğlu called himself a neo-Ottoman on Tuesday while answering to journalists’ questions.

While speaking at the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) camp at Ankara’s Kızılcahamam district, Davutoğlu said Turkish geography puts additional responsibilities for Turkey and Turkey certainly considers these responsibilities. “Many developments in the Balkans, the South Caucasus, the Middle East and in the Central Asia concern Turkey, too,” Davutoğlu said. Also pointing out to some media outlets claiming that the Foreign Minister said he is a neo-Ottoman, Davutoğlu said he has never said anything either in Turkey or outside about this. “We are particularly very sensitive about this. When others use, I have always warned that we do not count it correct,” he added. Evaluating the comments surrounding his works, Davutoğlu said it is impossible for us to accept the term “neo-Ottomanism” both in a way it is used in Turkey and abroad. “Turkish Republic is a modern nation state and it is in the equal status with the countries in the region. We can build diplomatic relations with any big or small countries, which previously were in Ottoman geography in an equal status. This is what modern diplomacy requires. I have never used this term in such a way. Written media outlets, unfortunately, are not reflecting the truth,” Davutoğlu said.
