On this day in 1970, Turkey signed the additional protocol on the agreement establishing an association between the European Economic Community and the Republic of Turkey, signed in Ankara on Sept. 12, 1963.

Today is St. George’s Day in Georgia. St. George is regarded as the patron saint of several countries in the world. Most of these countries, however, celebrate St. George’s Day on April 23.

Today is the Feast Day of Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263) in the Russian Orthodox Church. Nevsky was the grand prince of Novgorod and Vladimir during a time when the country was shaken by German invasions. He became a central and somewhat legendary figure because of his military victories over the Germans.

Today is Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan. This national holiday commemorates labor and production and giving thanks to one another. In recent years, events organized on this day have been related to the environment, peace and human rights. Labor Thanksgiving Day is a modern version of an ancient rice harvest festival believed to have been held as early as the seventh century.

Today is Rudolf Maister Day in Slovenia. Rudolf Maister-Vojanov (1874-1934) was a Slovene major in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. The major organized local Slovenian volunteers and took control of Lower Styria. This secured the area for the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. He was promoted to general by the National Council for Styria.
