"The common goal of the negotiations is full membership. I hope the member states would hear me out and make sure that Turkey's membership process moves ahead," said Martti Ahtisaari, head of a commission working toward Turkey's accession to the European Union.

Ahtisaari heads the Independent Commission on Turkey, which issued its latest report on September 7, "Breaking the Vicious Circle," and the commission members are on a tour of European capitals to promote the Turkish membership.

Ahtisaari said the commission aimed at launching a rational and sound debate over Turkey-EU agenda urged the Union not to place any more obstacles against the opening of policy chapters in membership talks.

"We want the EU to avoid creating any alternative situation," Ahtisaari said.
