Following him, Naim Süleymanoğlu also broke world records in his weight class and won five gold medals, and Fedail Güler broke two world records, winning two gold medals. No success approaching this had ever been attained by any Turkish sport team in any world championship.

Today is World Toilet Day. Promoted by the World Toilet Organization (WTO), this day aims to increase awareness of sanitation and sanitation-related diseases such as diarrhea. It may sound absurd to have such a day, but given the fact that more than 1 billion people without sanitary facilities relieve themselves on streets and in rivers, contaminating water and spreading disease, it seems the world should lend an ear to the WTO.

Today is International Men’s Day in Canada. The idea of observing a day for men was suggested by Mikhail Gorbachev and then adopted by the United Nations. Recognition of the day is limited worldwide and different countries observe the day on different dates.

Today is the Garifuna Day in the Central American nation of Belize. This day celebrates the arrival of the first Black Caribs from St. Vincent and Roatán in 1823 and their settlement in the country. Today the Garifuna ethnic group makes up 7.6 percent of the population of this tiny country.

Today is Mali’s Liberation Day. This day commemorates the bloodless coup of 1968, which removed Modibo Keita from power.

Today is the anniversary of the day when Pele scored his 1,000th goal, which he dedicated to the poor children of Brazil. The 1969 goal was scored against the team Vasco da Gama.

Today is the fourth anniversary of the Haditha killings. On this day in 2005, US marines allegedly massacred 24 citizens in the town of Haditha in Iraq. The impact of Haditha was immense and due to the ensuing public outrage, the US administration was forced to open an investigation of the marines. The ensuing case continued for about two years, at the end of which all charges against the marines were dropped.

On this day in 1493, Christopher Columbus set foot on an island in the Caribbean Sea which he dubbed San Juan Bautista. The island was later renamed to Puerto Rico (or “rich port” in English). The island was already inhabited by the Taino people. The discovery of Puerto Rico is an official public holiday celebrated in Puerto Rico every year.

Today is Flag Day in Brazil. The modern flag of Brazil was officially adopted on Nov. 19, 1889. The concept was the work of Raimundo Teixeira Mendes, with the collaboration of Miguel Lemos and Manuel Pereira Reis. The design was executed by Décio Vilares.

Today is the liberation day of Keşan (Edirne) and Meriç (Edirne). Keşan and Meriç were liberated from Greek occupation on the same day in 1922.
