Today is the fourth anniversary of the Haditha killings. On this day in 2005, US marines allegedly massacred 24 citizens in the town of Haditha in Iraq. On this day in 1493, Christopher Columbus set foot on an island in the Caribbean Sea which he dubbed San Juan Bautista. The island was later renamed to Puerto Rico (or “rich port” in English). The island was already inhabited by the Taino people. The discovery of Puerto Rico is an official public holiday celebrated in Puerto Rico every year.
Today is Flag Day in Brazil. The modern flag of Brazil was officially adopted on Nov. 19, 1889. The concept was the work of Raimundo Teixeira Mendes, with the collaboration of Miguel Lemos and Manuel Pereira Reis. The design was executed by Décio Vilares.
