“Our disagreements in principle continue,” Talat told reporters yesterday after meeting Christofias in the buffer zone separating the Turkish and Greek Cypriot parts of the island. He added that he and Christofias will review the progress achieved in the talks so far at a meeting scheduled for Friday.
Talat and Christofias have held 52 rounds of talks since September 2008, but an agreement remains elusive. Property is one of the most complicated disputes hindering any settlement. A Northern Cyprus commission established to look into complaints from Greek Cypriots who had to leave their property in the Turkish Cypriot north following a Turkish military intervention in 1974 reportedly recently offered record-high sums to two Greek Cypriot complainants to compensate for the property they had to abandon in the north.
Talat has said that he may not run for re-election in presidential polls in April if there is no prospect for a settlement in the island.
