Today is Independence Day in Latvia. On this day in 1918, Latvia declared its independence from Germany and Russia. The independence was not recognized until 1921 and was lost during World War II only to be regained in 1990.

Today is a national holiday in Oman. On this day, the sultanate celebrates the birthday of Sultan Qaboos bin Said (b. 1942). Sultan Qaboos has ruled over the Sultanate of Oman since 1970.

On this day in 1993, South Africa adopted the interim constitution of 1993 that forbade racial discrimination. South Africa adopted its permanent constitution in 1996. After 200 years, basic civil rights were finally given to the blacks in South Africa by this interim constitution.

On this day in 2000, one of the doyens of traditional Turkish music, Yıldırım Gürses (1939-2000), passed away. In addition to being a performer, Gürses was one of the most productive composers of 20th century Turkish music.

Today is Mickey Mouse’s birthday. On this day in 1928, Mickey Mouse appeared on the screen of Street Theater in New York City as the first talking animated picture.

Today is the anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre, which took place in 1978. On this date Rev. Jim Jones, the leader of the People’s Temple, orchestrated the mass suicide of more than 900 people at Jonestown, Guyana. The Jonestown Massacre is the biggest murder-suicide in history. It was directed and imposed upon the Jonestown community by the leader of the movement, but the spark came with the murder of US Representative Leo J. Ryan after visiting this religious cult and advocating that some members of the cult be free to leave.

On this day in 1922, Uzunköprü, in Turkey’s Edirne province, was liberated from joint Greek-French occupation.
