Yeni Şafak: “Dersim earthquake,” the daily said in the headline of its main story yesterday, reporting that statements of Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Onur Öymen in Parliament last week about the government’s response to a 1937 rebellion in the predominantly Alevi city of Tunceli, then known as Dersim, shook the CHP as Alevis took to the streets across Turkey in protest of his statements. CHP Deputy Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and CHP İstanbul provincial branch head Gürsel Tekin called on Öymen to resign. CHP leader Deniz Baykal is in a difficult situation, the daily said. In return, Öymen said Kılıçdaroğlu was among those who applauded his remarks so he cannot understand why he changed his attitude.

Zaman: “Cemevis and dedes [Alevi spiritual leaders] blacklisted one by one,” the daily announced in the headline of its lead story yesterday, reporting that a third letter mailed to civilian prosecutors in İstanbul by a military officer has revealed that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has blacklisted Alevi circles in society. The documents showed that villages with a predominantly Alevi population are blacklisted, with many details about even the clothes of Alevi citizens. “Alevi women generally wear trousers, they do not cove their heads and they do not pray,” says the document.

Taraf: A front-page story in the daily yesterday reported an interview the daily’s Neşe Düzel conducted with columnist Taha Akyol about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the nation’s founder. Akyol said Atatürk did not establish a single-party regime out of an obligation, but because he believed in it ideologically. He said it was not possible to have a democracy like the one today during Atatürk’s term.
