The swine flu and errors
Health Minister Recep Akdağ entered into the debate arena over swine flu with a stance that managed to frighten many.

He said that 40 million doses of the vaccine would be arriving in Turkey, and that if everyone was vaccinated, 400 people would die, whereas if everyone wasn’t vaccinated, 5,000 would die. But his aggressive stance aroused such doubts and confusion that stories even began circulating stating that Akdağ was actually working for the pharmaceutical monopolies. As it turns out, Akdağ thought the epidemic would break out in December, and that if 40 million people could be vaccinated by then, there would be a chance to block the disease from taking hold in Turkey. In the end though, his calculations were off, and the epidemic arrived early. And instead of 40 million doses, an amount small enough to vaccinate only 500,000 people arrived in Turkey. And so his plan fell apart. The crisis was not a well-managed one.
