Taraf: The first legal amendments in the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) Kurdish initiative, which aims to solve Turkey’s long-standing Kurdish problem, will come to the floor of Parliament on Nov. 10, the daily reported in its main story yesterday. With the amendment to be made to the Counterterrorism Act, punishments given to children who throw stones at police during illegal demonstrations will be lowered and the way before the re-trial of those who have engaged in acts of terror will be opened. The cases of 211 Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members will be reviewed in line with the demand of the European Court of Human Rights, the daily said. Zaman: “PKK members in Europe will wait, Makhmur camp will be evacuated,” the daily said in the headline of its lead story yesterday, reporting that the government is continuing to push ahead with the democratic initiative process. While the return of PKK members from Europe has been delayed for some time, the evacuation of the Makhmur camp in northern Iraq has been set as the first goal during the peace process. The government is considering a series of measures to prevent the emergence of a festive environment during the return of PKK members to Turkey because celebrations held for the return of a group of PKK members last month, during which they were welcomed like heroes, led to huge public outcry, the daily said. Star: “Alevi culture is our richness,” the daily said in the headline of its top story yesterday, quoting remarks from President Abdullah Gül, who paid a visit to the eastern province of Tunceli on Thursday. Becoming the first president to visit a cemevi (an Alevi house of worship) in the history of the Turkish Republic, Gül said Alevi culture makes an important contribution to Turkey’s value and richness. “It [Tunceli] is a province of ours that contributes value with its cultural richness and diversity as a city where Alevi culture lives on and where we have Alevi citizens. I am very proud to be in such a province of ours today,” Gül said.
