France’s minority policies similar to Turkey’s, parliamentary report says

A report by the Turkish Parliament’s Human Rights Commission summarizing the group’s findings after a fact-finding visit to France has concluded that France defends itself from criticism of some its contentious policies on minority rights, including its headscarf ban, by pointing to Turkey’s similar policies.

It has been revealed that France, one of the most strictly secular countries in the European Union, uses Turkey’s policies as a reference point for several of its policies, including issues related to minorities in Turkey and the headscarf ban. The report quoted Turks in France who complained of facing discrimination due to being Alevi, Kurdish or wearing a headscarf. When Turks complain of the French headscarf ban in public buildings, French officials point out that the same situation exists in Turkey. The report, which was signed by deputies from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) as well, harshly criticized France for its discrimination against minorities.

Under the leadership of parliamentary Human Rights Commission Chairman Zafer Üskül, a group of deputies conducted an investigation in France in early September. After listening to the problems of Turks in France and inspecting several prisons, the five-member group filed their observations, arguing that the problems faced by the Turkish community in France is related to Turkey’s economic and social development.

“Turkey’s treatment of and behavior towards its own citizens affects the official position in France. It creates grounds and legitimacy for discriminatory policies in France,” the report said.
