The annual festival, marking its 21st edition this year, is offering 197 short films at admission-free showings at the movie theaters of the French Culture Center, the Goethe Institut and the Pera Museum.

Although showings got under way on Wednesday at the Goethe Institut and the Pera Museum, the festival's opening ceremony will be held today at the French Culture Center in Taksim. Turkish filmmaker-screenwriter Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, who started his career with short films, will deliver a speech on the place and importance of short films in cinema during the opening.

Short films in four categories (fiction, animated, documentary and experimental) will be shown at the festival, which is being sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Actor Ruhi Sarı will be holding a workshop on acting on the sidelines of the festival. For the full schedule, visit www.istanbulfilmfestival.com.
