Everyday is special - 04 November 2009

Today is Victory Day in Italy. Also called National Unity Day, this day commemorates both the unification of Venice and Italy in 1866 and the Italian victory over the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I. The treaty that ended the war resulted in the transfer of Trent and Trieste from Austria to Italy.

Today is Flag Day in Panama. Though the Panamanian flag was officially adopted in 1925, celebrations are observed a day after Independence Day due to the fact that the designer, Maria Ossa de Amador, produced three copies of this flag in 1903 and these flags were flown the day after the Colombians left.

Today is the anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1995). In 1994, during his second term, Rabin won the Nobel Peace Prize together with Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat for their efforts toward peace, which culminated in the Oslo Accords. Rabin’s efforts cost him his life when he was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a right-wing Israeli radical who opposed Rabin’s signing of the Oslo Accords on religious and nationalist grounds.

On this day in 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his team explored the tomb of Tutankhamen, by far the best preserved and most intact pharaonic tomb ever found in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings.

Today is Tonga’s national day. Tonga is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean east of Fiji comprising about 150 islands. Long inhabited by Polynesians, the islands were sighted by the Dutch in 1616 and visited by the British navigator Capt. James Cook in the late 1700s. It became a British protectorate in 1900 and gained independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1970.

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Kazan in the Russian Orthodox Church. Our Lady of Kazan, also called the Theotokos of Kazan, is a holy icon that is venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church. It has been considered a palladium of Russia for centuries. Her feast days are July 21 and Nov. 4.

On this day in 1869, the first issue of the prominent scientific journal Nature was published. Although most scientific journals are now highly specialized, Nature is one of the few journals that still publish original research articles across a wide range of scientific fields.
