MPM productivity data, compiled by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) and released on Monday, show that the manufacturing sector started to enjoy a slight recovery from the global financial crisis with a considerable growth in productivity compared to the first quarter of this year, though the productivity figures still remain well below those of the same period of 2008. The industry’s productivity was up by 19.2 percent when compared to the first quarter of 2009. Production per work hour was down by 3.1 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period of 2008, while it increased by 16.7 percent compared to the preceding three months.

The highest decline in productivity was seen in passenger car manufacturing, with a 25.7 percent contraction in the given period. The wood and wood products industry enjoyed the greatest increase in productivity performance with a 28.8 percent increase in the second quarter of this year over the same months of 2008. The highest decline in productivity per work hour was seen in the production of coke, refined petroleum products and nuclear fuel with a 27.4 percent contraction in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period of last year.
