Heroism is a myth

Despite all the exploits of modernization that surround us, heroism is still a culture with which Turkey has not been able to dispense.

We say “despite modernization” because, just as with other values and ideas, modernization has tried to dispense with heroism, leaving it in the trash pile of history. In Turkey, the demand for “heroism” that all acknowledge is required by the military is one that attributes to this institution an extra sense of distinction -- which is what, in turn, makes this institution charged with protecting the rest of society and causes it to truly be regarded highly and looked upon with favor by society. But in reality, this institution, which sees it as its own right to declare anyone it wishes an “enemy,” takes great care to not let anyone else “damage” itself.
