According to police, a boy identified as E.G. and his friend, whose initials have been withheld, were detained by police in the Fatih neighborhood in front of Cumhuriyet Anadolu High School on Saturday night on charges of narcotics possession. The two minors, who were first taken to the Esenyurt Police Department Children’s Bureau and then Esenyurt State Hospital for a physical examination, escaped from the police vehicle on their way back from the hospital to the Children’s Bureau when the vehicle was stopped for a red light. Under Turkish law, minors cannot be handcuffed while being detained.

After a lengthy chase, the officers caught up with E.G. and his friend on a side street. A bullet fired from an officer’s gun during an ensuing fight hit police officer Halil Taşçı (29) in the head. Taşçı was rushed to Esenyurt State Hospital, where he died despite efforts to save him. He leaves behind a wife and one child. Speaking to the press at the hospital, where he rushed shortly after the shooting, İstanbul Police Chief Hüseyin Çapkın said it was not yet clear who was holding the gun during the brawl or which gun the fatal shot was fired from. “We are deeply saddened by this incident. I offer my condolences to his family and to our department,” he said. E.G. escaped, while his friend was apprehended shortly after the fight. İstanbul police continue to search for E.G.
