Taraf: In its main story yesterday, the daily covered an interview with Osman Öcalan, brother of outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan, who said he was determined to return to Turkey from a small town in the city of Sulaimaniyah in Iraq if the peace process continues. “If an appropriate legal and political environment is formed, I am ready to make a contribution to the solution process,” he said. Öcalan also talked about his proposal for the return of PKK members from the mountains, saying: “Around 500-600 PKK members should leave the mountains and begin to live in Arbil and then return to Turkey. Otherwise, the return of 34 PKK members recently will be nothing more than just a gesture. A group that represents the Turkish state came here, and we talked about the return. Important developments will take place before the end of the year,” Öcalan said.
Habertürk: “Very nice moves,” read the headline of the daily’s lead story yesterday, saying the government’s Kurdish initiative left its mark on the Oct. 29 Republic Day celebrations. While pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) members who earlier did not attend Republic Day celebrations attended the celebrations held across Turkey, commanders who earlier ignored DTP members shook hands with them.
Milliyet: “Early elections conversation,” said the headline of the daily’s top story yesterday, reporting on an exchange between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal during Republic Day celebrations in Ankara. When Erdoğan asked Baykal whether he was going to continue touring Turkey, Baykal said he would pay visits to some provinces such as İzmir and Karaman, adding, “It is uncertain what you [Erdoğan] are going to do, [so we need to be prepared],” in remarks that have been taken to mean that Baykal expects Erdoğan to call for early elections at any time.
