Today is the 92nd anniversary of Mata Hari’s execution.

On this day in 1917, the most famous spy in Western history, Mata Hari (Margaretha Geertruida Zelle), the Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan, was executed by firing squad for espionage during World War I because of her work for the Germans. Mata Hari either worked as a double agent for the French and the Germans at the same time or was used as a scapegoat by French counterespionage. Mata Hari’s name was synonymous with “femme fatale” during World War I.

Today is Teachers’ Day in Brazil. In 1947 teachers from a small school in Sao Paulo organized the first celebration of Teachers’ Day on this day. The date was chosen because on Oct. 15, 1827, Dom Pedro I approved a decree regulating elementary schools in Brazil. The celebration gained popularity throughout the country, and Oct. 15 was officially designated Teachers’ Day in 1963.

Today is Evacuation Day in Tunisia. This day commemorates the withdrawal of French troops from the country on this day in 1962. Tunisia was already declared independent from France in 1956, but the French troops stayed in the country for six more years after independence.

Today is the anniversary of the Declaration of the Independence in Bosnia and Herzegovina. On this day in 1991, the country declared its independence from the former Yugoslav federation. This declaration was followed by a referendum for independence from Yugoslavia in February and March. The people of Bosnia and Herzegovina opted for independence, and actual independence was gained on March 1, 1992.

Today is International White Cane Day and is observed mainly in the United States. This day promotes the rights to independent travel and movement of those who are visually impaired. It also focuses on the responsibilities of the visually able to assist those who are visually impaired to travel with safety and confidence.

Today is Rectification Day in Burkina Faso. On this day in 1987, President Blaise Compaoré launched the Movement of Rectification that led to the establishment of democratic institutions which in turn led to political freedom and economic renewal in the framework of regional and global integration.
