‘12 Giant Men' clinch Game On basketball crown

The Turkish men's national basketball team, also known as the “12 Giant Men,” became the champion of the Game On warm-up tournament, which was held in London in preparation for next month's EuroBasket 2009 championship, beating Poland 66-58.

Turkey defeated Israel on the first day of the tournament 85-69 and won against England 70-63 on Saturday before qualifying for the final.

In the final game on Sunday, the Polish side had better scoring than Turkey for the first three quarters. Around five minutes to the end of the game, the Turkish national team began leading the game and maintained its superiority until the end.

While Turkish Ersan İlyasova was the top scorer of the game with 23 points, famous Turkish NBA player Hidayet Türkoğlu scored 11 points.

The Turkish team took the cup after the match between England and Israel for third place.

Turkey's squad for the tournament included Bekir Yarangüme, Sinan Güler, Engin Atsür, Ömer Onan, İlyasova, Semih Erden, Fatih Solak, Ender Arslan, Ömer Aşık, Türkoğlu, Barış Hersek and Oğuz Savaş. Meanwhile, in another basketball tournament held in Lithuania, the U16 European Championship Men, the Turkish men's U16 national basketball team was beaten by France 66-79 and finished eighth overall. The French side led the game in all quarters. The national team returned to Turkey yesterday.
