| Here is a striking statement made by Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek at a ceremony in Nicosia marking the 26th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC): “If there are people who think to themselves, ‘It is between Cyprus or the EU,’ Turkey’s choice will always be to side with the Cypriot Turks. | |||
| Everyone needs to understand this well.” It seems to us that there were three groups to which Çiçek was trying to send a message: The first was the EU, the second was the Cypriot Turks and the third and final message was aimed at the Greek Cypriot leadership. What we hope is that events do not lead Turkey into having to make a choice between “either Cyprus or the EU.” The correct choice, and the best for everyone, would be “both Cyprus and the EU.” | |||
