An ‘axis’ debate in Washington

Our main topic today is the shift in the axis of Turkish foreign policy. The standard opinion voiced in newspapers is along the lines that “Washington and Europe are giving up on the AK Party [Justice and Development Party].”

But in fact, the situation is just the contrary of this. As someone involved in journalism in the US for years, let me note what I have observed: The West, and in particular Washington, continues to look warmly on the AK Party administration, despite everything. And what’s more important, they continue to look warmly on working in cooperation with it. The conclusion I have arrived at is this: Washington really does view Turkey and the AK Party administration as a “solid ally” and as a “beneficial partner” when it comes to regional matters such as the question presented by Iran.
