What has changed in
our foreign policy?
|
It is a fact that there have been some significant changes in Turkish foreign policy as of late. Those watching these changes with concern from the West are alleging that Turkey is moving further away from the West and leaning more towards the East, the Middle East in particular.

There are even those who believe that if Ankara is to continue on its current path, it will wind up breaking off completely from the West. This is the result, though, of some Westerners viewing Turkey with their own outdated criteria. Actually, Turkey has changed. Just as the general conjunctures of the world have changed. During the Cold War era, Turkey’s foreign policy was generally based on the West. In relation to threats both internal and external, Ankara would move in concert with its Western allies. In those years, Turkey did not possess the luxury of a more independent set of policies. But in the wake of the Cold War, the conditions and balances of the world changed. And within this framework, Turkey began to move more according to its own interests, especially when it came to certain topics. The world is very different nowadays, as is Turkey.
