Ordu faces water
shortage after rain

The Black Sea province of Ordu is suffering from a severe water shortage after the Melet River, which provides the largest amount of water to the city, became polluted as a result of days of heavy rain.

The pollutants came from mines in the region, which had become filled with rainwater. Examinations have revealed that the amount of lead in the river has increased drastically following the rain. While a maximum of three milligrams of lead per cubic meter of water is regarded as normal, the amount of lead in the Melet River was 338 milligrams per cubic meter. Ordu Mayor Seyit Torun said: “We stopped taking water from the river. We have very little water left that would be sufficient only for one day. We will not take any water from the river until the lead level in the river decreases to a normal level.” Torun also called on the public to conserve water.
