Many people headed to coastal recreation spots for picnics with their families or to take a break. However, some of these outings turned fatal, and a total of 12 people drowned while trying to swim in the sea, rivers or lakes.

Three youths and one man drowned on Sunday in Samsun's 19 Mayıs district, on the Black Sea, when Elifnur Öz, 12, Feyzanur Öz, 10, and Hüsranur Öz, 14, went adrift while swimming in the Black Sea and their uncle Sadık Koçburan, 35, tried to save them. In the district of Siverek in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, Sinan Özdede went to the village of Mızar for a picnic on Sunday. He drowned in the Euphrates River, where he was trying to cool off. His body was recovered four hours later by a rescue team.

In Oymataş, a village in the province of Batman, Yusuf Çiçek, 17, and his nephew Ömer Çiçek, 14, went fishing in a stream on Sunday. Ömer Çiçek fell into the stream after losing his balance. Yusuf Çiçek was able to save his nephew, but was unable to escape the water himself.

A 16-year-old teenager died in the district of Kocaali in the province of Sakarya on Sunday while swimming in the Melen River. In the Anatolian province of Karaman, two boys, Ferhat Şimşek and Durmuş Kömür, fell into a drainage channel. Health officials were able to resuscitate Kömür, but Şimşek died.
