Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, who attended the graduation ceremony at the Kemal Serhatlı Police Vocational School in the southern province of Adana, said Turkey has the lowest rate of crime among European countries and that Ankara is the most secure capital in all of Europe.
He said the police force was working with three other institutions to ensure that citizens live in peace and safety. Atalay also complained about news circulating in the foreign media that portrays Turkey as potentially risky place for holidays. “We were deeply saddened by such news. Turkey is a country where one can spend their holiday safely. We are very careful about this. We take all the necessary security measures,” the minister said.
After delivering his speech, Atalay handed out diplomas to the top 10 graduates out of the 258 new graduates and gave them presents.
Industry and Trade Minister Nihat Ergün, who attended the graduation ceremony at the Kayseri Police Vocational School, praised the efforts of the police in maintaining security in the cities. He said the areas police take care of are smaller than the areas taken care of by the military but they are more densely populated. Ergün said most of the crimes were either committed or organized in cities, stressing that these facts should be taken into consideration when looking at the sensitivity of the police in combating or preventing crimes.
“The most important goal of the police force should be the prevention of crimes before they are committed. We all know the performance the police force has demonstrated over the past years. Domestic security in a sense means the protection of human rights and freedoms because crimes violate individuals' rights,” said Ergün.
Diyarbakır Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, who attended the graduation ceremony at the Ali Gaffar Okkan Police Vocational School, said the young police officers will wear their uniforms with pride and deserve the trust the public has placed in them.
