S. Korean students win INEPO gold medal

South Korean students won the gold medal at INEPO.

South Korean students won the gold medal on Wednesday at the International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO) organized by Fatih College.

Jeong Joon Park and Hong Jun Choi were awarded for their research on “Micrococcus MJU-14 and Alteromonas MJU-11 for the Production of New and Renewable Bioenergy.” They were followed by Kwang Yıl Koh and Tae Hyun Ahn, again from South Korea, with their project on “The Role of Carbon Dioxide in Recycling Industrial Waste.” The bronze medal went to a Pakistani group for its new approach toward the treatment of liver diseases. Eighy-five teams from 41 countries attended the 17th INEPO competition. The students presented their proposals for solutions to environmental problems over the course of the three-day event and created slogans to promote the preservation of the environment. The Turkish delegation used “Our Lungs Want Oxygen” as its slogan. Speaking at the awards ceremony, İsak Şahin, director general of the Fatih Education Institutions, said, “I understand better today that all humanity is on the same ship.” He emphasized that environmental protection serves not only nature but also world peace.
