Earlier this week, President Abdullah Gül raised hopes about the resolution of the decades-old Kurdish problem when he said it could be resolved by improving the country's democratic standards. He also appealed to opposition parties and the country's intellectuals to avoid elitism and make positive contributions to the process of resolving the Kurdish question.
The main opposition CHP has also started taking initiatives to find a solution to the problem. After a long wait a CHP official met with representatives of the DTP on Wednesday with the CHP's Mesut Değer, a former Diyarbakır deputy, and mostly engaged in the Kurdish problem, dined with Ahmet Türk and Sırrı Sakık of the DTP at their invitation. During the dinner, Ahmet Türk is reported to have said the CHP has a significant role to play in the solution to this problem. Stating that the CHP is following a more courageous policy towards Kurdish issue when compared with past years, Türk said the CHP should contribute to the solution process as a social democratic party.
Stressing the CHP leader, Deniz Baykal's, previous initiatives regarding the problem, Değer said they will support all initiatives except separatist ones. Noting that the problem of terrorism in Turkey (led by the Kurdistan Workers' Party – PKK) should be separated from Kurdish problem, Değer said the DTP members should be careful regarding this issue.
Erdoğan to receive DTP representatives
In the meantime, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is readying to meet DTP representatives - who asked for an appointment from him last week - in the coming days. Erdoğan, who refused such a meeting last year saying he could not meet with them unless they declare the PKK to be terrorist organization, is expected to accept the DTP's request because of the recent positive atmosphere in the country about a solution to the issue.
