I AM NOT AMAZED THAT ERGENEKON EXTENDS TO CYPRUS

European Union closely follows to developments regarding Cyprus leg of the Ergenekon probe where names of former TRNC President Rauf Denktaş and Dervis Eroğlu, chairman of opposition National Unity Party (UBP), were involved in.

Jan Marinus Wiersma, the deputy chairman of the Socialist Group of the European Parliament, said it was not a surprise for them that the probe spread to the Island.

In an exclusive interview with daily Zaman, Wiersma said Ergenekon probe was an opportunity to show rule of law.

 

MEASURES PACKAGES PROVE USEFUL

Global economic crisis fuels unemployment in Turkey. Construction, automotive, and textile are the main sectors that lay-off workers. Government has started to give "salary support" to business enterprises to maintain current employment.

Under the support, state pays the salaries of workers for 6 months (during the time they do not work) in enterprises that do not lay-off workers.

Consequently, the companies gave up the idea of suspending manufacturing after the measures that were announced one after the other.

OVERTHROW HIM

The documents, which were given place in the second indictment of the Ergenekon case, revealed that the organization made several assassination and coup d'etat plans since it could not prevent rise of the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party. The only target of the organization was to overthrow Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Members of the organization carried out a number of works to defame Erdoğan and his government. They even planned to assassinate Greek-Orthodox and Armenian patriarchs to create an atmosphere of chaos in the country.

 

THOUSANDS OF FILMS ON A SINGLE DVD

Turkish scientists took a giant step. The Bilkent University succeeded in increasing for thousands of times the capacity of DVDs which are normally limited with 50-100 Gbyte through nanotechnology. It will be possible to copy thousands of films on those DVDs known as "Magical".

"I WILL ASK ACCOUNT FOR IT"

Two Turkish soldiers killed in the southeastern province of Sirnak were laid to rest after a ceremony in Istanbul. President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, ministers and high-ranking army officers were at the ceremony held in Atakoy district for Tuncay Turken, one of the martyrs.

Turken's 9-year-old brother Yasin, who stood next to Erdoğan at the ceremony, was sad.

"I will settle accounts with murderers of my brother," he screamed.

 

GÖKHAN STIRS UNITED STATES

Turkish news anchor Gökhan Taşkın, who put on a black face on TV during his new hour, caused controversy in the United States.

Taşkın, who earlier wore a headscarf while anchoring news, had said the Turkish proverb (İsteyenin bir yüzü kara, vermeyenin iki yüzü) "the one who asks [for something] has one side of his face dark (black); the one who refuses [to give] has both sides" as roughly translated. (This is a Turkish saying about unkept promises resulting a "dark face" which equals to shame here.)

His words were assessed as racism in the United States.

ALLEGATIONS ABOUT SUMMIT IN MOSCOW

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan is getting ready to meet with President Dmitriy Medvedev of Russia in Moscow on April 16. The meeting would be focused on Upper Karabakh dispute. PanArmenia News Agency of Armenia claimed that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would also be in Moscow the same day.

 

FROM MAIDEN'S TOWER TO RED TOWER

President Abdullah Gül gave start to 142-km Turkey Cycling Tour by waving the checkered flag. The eight-tour tour began from Istanbul and will end in Alanya town of the southern province of Antalya. Therefore, it is also known as "from Maiden's Tower to Red Tower". Mauro Finetto of Italy from "CSF Group Navigare" won the first phase of the race.

TURKEY MAY HELP OBAMA

Mark Parris, who served as ambassador of the United States to Turkey when Bill Clinton was the U.S. President, commented on the recent visit of U.S. President Barack Obama to Turkey.

Asked why Obama visited Turkey, Parris said, "when you take over such severe and urgent problems, you start looking for friends that will help you. Turkey may help Obama more than anybody else."

 

14 HAND GRENADES IN MALATYA

14 hand grenades and a smoke bomb were found in a box that was taken out from an irrigation canal belonging to Turkish Waterworks Directorate. A citizen saw the box that was in the mud. The bombs were wrapped in newspapers dated 1997 and 1999.

TWO CONDITIONS FOR KURDS

Iraqi Kurdish parliamentarian Mahmoud Osman, who is known for his close relations with the terrorist organization PKK, told the backstage of U.S. President Barack Obama's talks with Iraqi Kurdish leaders at his visit to Iraq. According to this information, Obama gave regional administration in the north of Iraq these two clear messages:

Baghdad condition: Our ties with you will get weaker as long as your ties with Baghdad weaken. We consider the Kurdish region a part of Iraq.

Ankara condition: United States will get closer to you as you approach to Turkey. If you go away from Turkey, we will become distant to you.

The International Monetary Fund and Turkey agreed in principle on a three-year loan deal.

SENER TO FORM HIS NEW PARTY ON APRIL 26

Abdullatif Sener, who has been carrying out his political works under the name of New Formation Movement after resigning from the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party, will form his new political party on April 26. A petition about foundation of the new political party with nearly 40 founder members including former deputies and ministers, will be submitted to the Interior Ministry on April 27.

 

"WE GOT MAY DAY, WE WILL ALSO GET TAKSİM"

Suleyman Celebi, chairman of the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), said that the May Day should be celebrated in Istanbul's Taksim Square. "If the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party had won 47 percent of votes in the local elections, the May Day would have not been declared a public holiday. Now, I call on the government to let us to celebrate the May Day in Taksim Square out of respect to 34 people who died there in 1977," he said.

OVERTIME WORK FOR UNION

Labor Minister Faruk Çelik will knock on the doors of the political parties for a union law that will be in line with the criteria of International Labor Organization (ILO).

A draft resolution regarding unions has been brought to the agenda prior to the ILO meeting in May. Labor Minister Çelik will visit political parties that have groups in the parliament to discuss the bill that was prepared for adjustment with the EU.

ILO Turkey representative Gulay Aslantepe said, "Turkey has been under criticism since 1984 on union rights. The minister is decisive on the matter."

 

ISSUES DIFFICULT WITH IMF

State Minister Mehmet Şimşek, in an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal, said, "we have not yet reached an agreement with the IMF. There are matters to be negotiated. The results may continue till the end of month."
