Speaking to reporters at the capital's Esenboğa Airport on Sunday as he returned home from a four-day state visit to the Russian Federation, Gül said he and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had signed a joint declaration to develop bilateral relations in all fields in Moscow.
"I proceeded to Tatarstan after my talks in Moscow and was happy to be the first Turkish president ever to visit Tatarstan," Gül said, adding that he also had discussions in Tatarstan to promote the interests of Turkish businessmen.
Authorities suggest that Turkish-Russian relations have entered a new era with Gül's Moscow visit. The joint declaration, aimed at deepening friendly relations and improving multidimensional cooperation between the two countries, was defined as a "strategic document" by the Russian side. "I believe this visit will open a new page between our countries," Gül had said on Friday in Moscow.
