Solar energy to power traffic lights

The Solar Intersection Project, run by BELBİM, envisages solar-powered traffic lights.
The Solar Intersection Project, run by BELBİM, envisages solar-powered traffic lights.
Pilot implementation has begun for the Solar Intersection Project, which expects to harness the power of the sun to provide uninterrupted power to İstanbul's traffic lights.
The initial phase of the Solar Intersection Project run by BELBİM, a municipal information technology company, has started, with test systems installed on traffic lights at the İstanbul Atatürk Airport.

The Solar Intersection Project introduces a system whereby photovoltaic solar panels collect solar energy from the sun's rays atop poles at intersections. A portion of the electricity generated with the aid of these panels will be stored, enabling continuous power supply to the intersection light systems at night and on sunless days.

The system will be unaffected by power cuts and aims to prevent traffic accidents and congestion resulting from stoplight system malfunction.

Expectations from the project

BELBİM representatives have said the most important benefit of the Solar Intersection Project is its use of renewable, clean energy. They say their goal with the project is to successfully implement the usage of renewable energy, noting that with the system energy will be saved. The innovation of electricity being used at the site of its production will prevent interruptions stemming from electricity grid problems -- meaning intersection systems will never be out of order.

BELBİM officials note that even during extraordinary circumstances such as natural disasters, as long as the intersection structures are still standing, the systems will work and enable normal traffic management.

The modules in the solar energy systems for intersections are unique, powering traffic lights as well as traffic cameras and sensors, BELBİM emphasized. The solar-powered intersection systems require no maintenance and do not contain any parts that need replacement, and they last around 20 years, BELBİM says.

If the amount of sunshine the earth receives in one day were converted into electricity, it would provide for the electrical needs of all the earth's residents for one year, BELBİM representatives emphasized. If the pilot program and testing go well, BELBİM aims to install the system at all İstanbul intersections.
