Family files charges in grisly stillbirth

A couple has filed charges with the prosecutor's office in connection with a stillbirth that occurred after doctors decided halfway through a natural delivery to switch to a Caesarean section.

According to the Anatolia news agency, Aziz and Mevlüde Tezcan traveled to the Tokat Karşıkaya Birth and Children's Hospital at the end of October when Mevlüde, pregnant with the couple's third child, a boy, began having contractions. The mother was admitted for a natural delivery, but the medical team discovered that the baby weighed more than expected. Unable to complete the delivery, the staff says they decapitated the infant in order to save the mother's life.

The couple filed charges with the prosecutor, alleging that malpractice caused the death of their child. Explaining what happened to her after she was admitted to the hospital, Mevlüde Tezcan said: "They took me in for a normal delivery, and the baby's head came out but the body didn't because it was so heavy. Whatever happened to the baby at that moment caused the doctor and midwife to become alarmed. He said, 'I'm switching to a Cesarean immediately.' I don't remember anything after that."

The mother said she was certain the baby was decapitated before it died, explaining that they were working so roughly during the delivery that she was shaking on the delivery table. "I filed charges, but the trial hasn't started yet. I want the guilty parties to be punished. What's happened to me shouldn't happen to any other mothers. It's a very painful thing."

No autopsy was performed after the incident, and the baby was buried the next day. Local Tokat health authorities subordinate to the Health Ministry have started an investigation into the incident.

Over the weekend, another couple filed complaints with authorities in Nazilli when a similar mid-delivery procedural change resulted in the decapitation of their child.
