Operations against the PKK are ongoing, the military said in a statement on its Web site. "Targets proven to belong to the terrorist organization PKK/KONGRA-GEL in northern Iraq's Zap region were attacked successfully by Turkish fighter jets on July 23, 2008," the statement said. The PKK uses northern Iraq as a base from which to launch attacks on the Turkish military. The statement said only PKK targets were fired upon and that no civilian casualties or damage had been incurred.

The regional Kurdish administration in northern Iraq confirmed the attack, saying it took place at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday night. Speaking to the Cihan news agency, Jabbar Yawar, a spokesman for the local peshmerga forces, said the assault lasted for about an hour. He also said that the attack targeted the areas of Nero and Rekan in the district of Amedi in northern Iraq, adding that these areas have been unpopulated for 20 years. The military did not give any information on PKK casualties, saying it was still trying to confirm losses suffered by the terrorist group.

The operation takes place a week after an operation against the PKK in southeastern Anatolia. Some 40,000 troops are currently stationed along Turkey's border with Iraq. The United States, which considers the PKK a terrorist organization, supplies intelligence to the Turkish military about the group's movements and provides airspace clearance for Turkish fighter jets.
