Man convicted of killing German girl found hanged in prison

A Turkish man convicted of raping and murdering an 11-year-old German girl has been found dead in prison.

The Anatolia news agency said 39-year-old Bülent Gülbay was found hanged from the bars of his prison cell in the central town of Karaman. Officials were not immediately available for comment. Anatolia noted that prison guards found Gülbay's body Saturday morning. His body was sent for a routine autopsy. Gülbay had been transferred to the Karaman prison after being attacked by inmates in another jail soon after his 2004 arrest. He was convicted in 2006 of raping and killing Lisa Eder while she was vacationing with her family in the resort town of Alanya in October 2004.
