New video game to promote rehabilitation for paralyzed

Engineers from the Middle East Technical University Technopolis (METUTECH), a science and research center, have developed a video game to promote the rehabilitation of paralysis patients. The game, “Çiftlik” (Farm), aims to help paralyzed people improve the coordination between their hands, arms, eyes and brain. The game can be played with an optical remote control without the use of a mouse or keyboard.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency on Sunday, Tunca Selbes, a software engineer for technology firm Simsoft, said doctors from Ankara University’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center had originally inspired him to develop a video game for paralysis patients receiving treatment at the center.

Furthermore, Selbes said that in their preliminary research, they had been able to find only one video game designed to improve paralysis rehabilitation. “Such an educational video game was not attempted or developed in Turkey before. We have completed the first beta rehabilitation game based solely on our own research in the short period of one month,” he added.

“We will continue to improve the game. ... The beta edition will be tested with patients, and we will present to doctors the version that will provide paralysis patients the maximum [benefit],” Selbes said.

Selbes also emphasized that in addition to improving hand and arm movement, “adult and child patients alike will be able to forget their problems and have enjoyable treatment in hospitals or other institutions providing rehabilitation services.”
