Doctors perform C-section on brain dead woman

Doctors at the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital on Friday performed a cesarean section surgery on a woman who has been brain dead for almost a month.

Yıldız Alçı has been on life support since she succumbed to meningitis and was pronounced brain dead on Jan. 3. Her husband, Erdinç Ceyhan, with whom she already has two young children, had publicly asked doctors to sever life support for his partner -- and consequently that of his unborn child -- because of mounting medical bills and the prospect of raising three children alone. Ceyhan changed his mind over the fate of the six-month-old fetus after receiving pledges of financial support and even a house from the government and other charitable donors last week. The baby boy born from the unfortunate woman was immediately taken to the intensive care unit, doctors there said.
