The Atlasjet MD-83 plane, carrying 50 passengers and seven crew members, was flying from İstanbul to Isparta in southwestern Turkey when it crashed on approach to Isparta on Friday.

Ceren Ceylan, a one-and-a-half-month-old baby, and her mother, Melike Ceylan, were among those who perished in the crash. Melike boarded the flight early Friday with her baby to meet her husband in Isparta. Ceylan’s father-in-law, Ali Ceylan, stated that he talked to his daughter-in-law on the phone before she took off. “My son suffered a nervous breakdown after he heard about the plane crash, and we took him to the hospital. We did not get to see our newborn granddaughter even once. We will hold a funeral for my daughter-in-law and granddaughter after their bodies have been released to us.”

Atlasjet airplane bypasses airport

Meral Uysal, the mother of 26-year-old Sibel Uysal, who also died in the crash, said she saw the aircraft pass near the Isparta airport.

Uysal said that the plane passed the airport around 1:30 a.m. but headed in the direction of Keçiborlu and never returned while she was waiting to meet her daughter at the airport. She mourned for her daughter, recalling the bad dream she had the other night. Sibel, who was a pharmacist, was going to Isparta to visit her family over the weekend. Her parents waited at the airport the whole night.

First time on plane

Another of the victims of the crash, Tevfik Büyükçaylı, was taking a plane flight for the first time in his life.

A souvenir seller, Büyükçaylı came to İstanbul by bus to buy stock. He then decided to return to Isparta by plane. His cousin Hasan Hüseyin Demirdağaç said: “Tevfik had never been on a plane until now at 37 years of age. On the phone, he said that he was very excited over his first flight. We are very sad.” He was married with two children.
