Ministry of Public Works’ new project: People will soon be able to walk from Europe to Asia.

The Bosporus Bridge, which links Europe to Asia, will be opened to foot traffic after a 20-year interval as the Ministry of Public Works is about to finalize the project which will make it possible for passengers to walk to the other side of İstanbul.

The idea to open the bridge to passengers, first brought up by the Greater İstanbul Municipality, aims mainly to attract foreign tourists. Hence the fee to cross the bridge on foot will reflect fees charged at museums or important tourist spots like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The project managers estimate that European tourists in particular will be delighted to walk along the bridge. Photographers will be made available along the bridge to take instant snaps of tourists who want to make their experience an unforgettable one. The point of departure for those willing to walk along the Bosporus will be in Ortaköy on the European side of İstanbul, where tourists will have the opportunity to buy İstanbul souvenirs from many kiosks. Two elevators with a capacity of 15 people each will take the people up to the bridge, allowing them to walk the 1,074 meters between the European and Asian sides of the bridge. The Bosporus Bridge was first opened to foot traffic in 1974. It opened to traffic one year later and remained so until 1977. Due to increasing security concerns in those years, police closed the bridge to foot traffic in 1974. Children below the age of 7 were never allowed to walk on the bridge and the same restriction will reportedly be enforced when the bridge reopens to pedestrians. The police will also take measures to prevent people from throwing themselves from the bridge.
