The new “Foreign Mother of the Year” thanked the participants of the event for not only joining the ceremony, but for participating in a way that showed support for nongovernmental organizations such as IIS. She also thanked her two sons for staying with her in Ankara and one son for entering the university entrance exams in Athens. The chairman of the IIS, architect Mesut Gümüşdoğrayan, said they wanted to increase worldwide awareness about Turkey and Turkish people, culture and civilization. “The IIS has sponsored local cooking courses, practical Turkish courses, cultural seminars, tours and short trips in and around Ankara,” Gümüşdoğrayan said. He also mentioned the offering of Rumi classes and ney (reed flute) courses aimed at introducing Turkish Sufi master Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi. The IIS also plays an active role in European Voluntary Services projects which are among the programs of the European Union. Gümüşdoğrayan informed the participants that Mrs. Yennimata was awarded the “Foreign Mother of the Year” award because of her joint activities with local NGOs and the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, as well as the book “Life is a Journey,” which she wrote for handicapped children. Gümüşdoğrayan said the IIS is also going to be active during the summer and will be organizing a photography contest titled “Ankara from the Eyes of the Foreigners” and football games with the staff of larger embassies in Ankara.
