I cannot understand and condemn those who continuously use the term “regime,” which has an unclear meaning, instead of the three basic principles mentioned in the second clause of the Constitution. These three basic principles are democracy, laicism and the rule of law; these determine the main characteristics of the republic and an understanding of regime that fails to embrace all these three principles is faulty. When you read the April 27 memorandum carefully, you get the impression that one of these three basic principles, although there is no hierarchical order among them, is being preferred; the principle of secularism over the rule of law and democracy. It is clear that those who have written this memorandum don’t understand the concept of the republic at all. The important thing is to be committed to the republic in earnest, and not just in words.
