The feast is celebrated in Bulgaria under the name Lazarouvane, when girls fit to marry go out to dance and boys are given a chance to find a spouse.

Today is remembered as Mahavira Jayanti in Jainism. This is the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the man who gave Jainism its present-day form. He is sometimes wrongly called "the founder of Jainism." It may be more useful to think of him as a reformer and populariser of an ancient way of life, rather than as the founder of a faith. Jain legend tells that Mahavira was originally born as Vardhamana in north east India in 599 BCE as a prince. When he reached thirty years of age, not long after the death of both his parents, he left the royal palace to live the life of an ascetic, or a sadhana (one who renounces all worldly pleasures and comforts). In the end he attained Kevalnyan (enlightenment) and therefore was later called Mahavira, (the name means great hero: maha = great, vira = hero). Over the next centuries the Jain community grew and spread to the central and western parts of India. Jainism began to lose strength as Hinduism grew in the early part of the last millennium, and by the middle of the 19th century it was seriously weakened.

Today is Freedom Day in Malta. On this day Maltese people commemorate the closure of British military bases in Malta on March 31, 1979. This is a historical event in Malta. A monument on the Birgu waterfront commemorates this event in the history of the nation.

Today is the commemoration day of John Donne, a poet and priest in the Anglican and Lutheran Churches. John Donne (1572 - March 31, 1631) was a Jacobean poet and preacher, representative of the metaphysical poets of the period. His works, notable for their realistic and sensual style, include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and immediacy of metaphor, compared with that of his contemporaries. His literary works reflect these trends, with love poetry and satires from his youth, and religious sermons during his later years. Donne influenced great poets like W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, and W.H. Auden.

Today is the 'birthday' of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower built for the Paris World's Fair was opened on this day in 1889.
