A total of 16,000 foreign students study here, and 1,014 foreign academic staff are working in Turkey, mostly in foundation universities, as reported by the semi-official Anatolia news agency.

Middle East Technical University’s (METU) Rector Professor Ural Akbulut stated foreign staff and students have a major scientific contribution in a country and emphasized that the number should be increased.

A total number of 1,014 foreign teaching staff are working in Turkey including 248 at Bilkent University, 79 at Yeditepe University, 71 at Koç University, 61 at İzmir University of Economics, 53 at İstanbul Bilgi University, 41 at Boğaziçi University, 33 at İstanbul University, 23 at Hacettepe University and 14 at Marmara University and METU, 2005-2006 statistics from the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) revealed.

Some 16,000 foreign students study in Turkey including 1,973 at Anadolu University, 1,725  at İstanbul University, 1,149 at Ankara University and Marmara University, 991 at METU, 974 at Gazi University, 161 at Fatih University, 95 at Yeditepe University, 83 at Bilkent University and the majority in state universities.

Professor Akbulut said no country by itself has the ability to produce knowledge to compete with the rest of the world. Stating that gathering scientists from different countries will create a synergy for a rapid progress in science, Akbulut said: “An isolated country and an isolated university cause the biggest harm. The more a university cooperates with academics from other countries, the more it has a chance to produce new knowledge at world standards.”

Akbulut said the US implements this system very successfully and added that several universities in other countries have foreign-origin deputy rectors. “Between 50 to 60 percent of undergraduate students at several American universities are foreigners, and this is becoming more and more widespread in European countries as well,” Akbulut said.
