The rallies began on Tuesday in response to reports that American interrogation officers in Guantanamo Bay insulted the Islamic holy book, The Quran. Demonstrations have spread and 12 people were wounded when Afghani police and US troops opened fire on demonstrators. One hospital official, Mohammed Ayup Shinveri, said the 12 were brought to the hospital with bullet wounds.

Officials say the rallies are based on anger and that the grudge has spread around the city. Security forces want to put demonstrators under control, but this seems impossible for now.
