Speaking at his party’s parliamentary group meeting, Erdoğan said the purpose of what he called the “document of conspiracy against the nation” was to damage the reputation of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). He also said high-ranking generals in the army should not be reticent regarding the investigation but should do what they can to bring those responsible to justice. Erdoğan’s call showed his determination to reveal those behind the plot; however, there are still some who think that the plot, although it exposes the dirty plans of the army very clearly, has not drawn sufficient reaction or the action it would attract in a fully democratic nation.Bugün’s Gülay Göktürk complains about the silence of the government, Parliament, Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ and the public, and she finds their reactions against the military plot to be lacking when it is clear that this plot aimed at causing chaos in the country. “Those who gave the order [for the preparation of the plan], those who prepared and supported it are very obvious. But everyone is keeping silent. The government is maintaining its silence, and Prime Minister Erdoğan has settled for saying that the case was referred to the judiciary after he met with Başbuğ. Is this army not answerable to you [Erdoğan]? Are there not any administrative measures that you can take? Will you turn a blind eye to these generals who are in control of the army until the end of the judicial process?” asks Göktürk. As for Başbuğ’s silence, Göktürk says Başbuğ, who very much likes rebuking people with his force commanders standing behind him and who likes to talk about postmodernism, Max Weber and Samuel Huntington as if he were an expert, is keeping silent at a time when he should be speaking the most.
“There is only one part of the media that isn’t keeping silent over the plot. It is this segment that both exposed the plot is working to investigate it deeper. I ask, is this the scene of a democratic country? Is this the conscience of law? Is this the atmosphere of a country that thinks it deserved EU membership long ago?” asks Göktürk.
Star’s Mehmet Altan says if Başbuğ heard the statements Erdoğan made at his party’s parliamentary group meeting, he should immediately take those who were involved in devising the army plot to the judiciary; however, he warns that not only Çiçek, who undersigned the plot, but all the military officers behind the plot should be sent to court.
