If it is, then what is such an important document doing outside? My conviction that this document is real grows stronger as I look at the reaction of different people, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal and surprising names in the media. The meeting between the prime minister and the chief of general staff and the Justice and Development's Party's (AK Party) decision to apply to the civilian judiciary have also helped to reinforce my belief. It appears this document is authentic, and the prime minister has no doubt about it. It's possible that the prime minister may have been informed of additional documents and intelligence after the Taraf daily made the issue its headline. Another aspect that makes for a stronger argument is that the signature is not a photocopy or print, but a wet signature. Camera recordings in the official reports and the signatures of suspects' lawyers are pieces of evidence that the document is authentic.
Now lets get to the real, crucial question. If the document is authentic, then what is it doing outside? Ergenekon defendants claim the documents were placed in the office by members of the police force. But why should people who have access to these documents want to make the police get involved? They would have just handed them over directly to Taraf. Placing the documents in the office requires sneaking into the office and making sure not to leave any evidence. Furthermore, it poses a serious threat to the complete dismissal of the Ergenekon case. Besides, what is the reason for the hostility toward the police force? Personally, I think a possible answer to the question of what this document is doing out and about is that perhaps it was going to be shown to Ergenekon suspects.
We all know that if the Ergenekon suspects crack and start talking, the case will move to a different level. Recall that primary suspect Veli Küçük wrote a letter to retired Chief of General Staff Gen. İsmail Hakkı Karadayı, saying, “I am not that man.” Clearly the message of the letter was that if he spoke, it would jeopardize Karadayı's situation.
Küçük also released a statement through his daughter concerning former Chief of General Staff Gen. Hüseyin Kıvrıkoğlu, saying: “Being afraid in the wake of this conspiracy, being indifferent because of personal concerns and motives is the same as extending indirect support and standing on the same side as the people behind the conspiracy. Now is the time to overcome individual concerns. The Turkish Armed Forces [TSK] and its honorable members to whom Atatürk entrusted the republic must fulfill their duty and responsibility.”
Küçük's letters and statements were on the agenda in January of this year. Now, in the wake of such a threat, how can people within the TSK and people who still strive to support Ergenekon suspects persuade those inside? How can they prevent them from talking? The answer is very clear. They assure them that they have big plans so that they do not need to worry. For example, they can obtain an important document from inside and then write in that document that the TSK personnel are innocent and that they are being blamed because they were trying to fight reactionaryism. They can present a signed document to show that they are working with the media as part of efforts to protect them and to point out the headlines and news in the media.
This is my conviction. The seized document is authentic and was on its way to be presented to some people. I see it this way because many people were very upset when the document reached the chief of general staff. “What kind of a chief of general staff is he?” some asked. But why? Because they were upset that the order could not be kept.
With this document, relations between the military and politics have entered a different intersection. As an organization, the armed forces should not be exhausted with accusations of coup plans. This sacred institution must get rid of anti-democratic structures and people. It is time to have an armed forces that does not cause destruction and harm and that recognizes and complies with democracy.
